So how much do you know about Omega Watches? You already know that Omega Watches are a status icon of the wealthy and the privileged. Celebrity endorsers such as George Clooney, Maria Sharapova and Nicole Kidman make these watches famous worldwide.

The Omega Watch Company started in the year 1848. The Swiss Omega founder Louis Brandt who lived in La Chaux De Fonds in Switzerland started to create these watches by hand.

The first Omega watches that Louis Brandt created were the pocket watches. That was the style of watches in those days. It was the fashionable way to have a watch in those days. Attaching a bracelet to the time piece and carrying the watch in the pocket. At that time the watches were called “Bienne” watches.

When Louis Brandt passed in 1879, he left the Omega name to his sons Louis Paul Brandt and Cesar Brandt, which carried on the tradition of their father with precise craftsmanship and pride. In 1880, the sons decided to rename the company to “Bienne.”

The beginning of the Omega watch actually took place in 1894. Louis and Cesar Brandt introduced the brand Omega to the Swiss. The Omega watch became one of Switzerland’s biggest and most luxurious exports.

The two brothers died in 1903. Paul Brandt was the oldest of four children and took over the Omega Company, after the death of both Brandt brothers.

Omega merged with the Swiss luxury watch brand Tisso. The merger between both companies was a huge success. SSIH, which is the Société suisse pour l’industrie horlogère, was created as a parent company of the merged companies. The SSIH merged with over fifty more companies and became the third largest producers of luxury watches, which created a huge buzz around the world.

During this time, Omega produced some of the best timepieces available. Genuine vintage Omega watches are still to this day highly sought out for and even famous today.

Omega built a very good name for them during World War II. Omega created military and pilot watches for our servicemen. Omega has always been known for their great attention to detail and fine craftsmanship. Some of the other popular watches from the era are the Omega Speedmaster chonograph, also the Omega Seamaster waterproof watch, and of course, the Omega Constellation “C”.

Omega made history in 1999 by introducing the first mass-produced watch incorporating the co-axial escapement, which was invented to George Daniels. The co-axial escapement works with virtually no lubrication, which eliminates one of the problems of the traditional lever escapement. Using radial friction instead of sliding friction at the impulse surfaces reduces friction, which results in longer service intervals and creates greater accuracy.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph is the official watch that was worn by American Astronauts. NASA began using the chonograph in the early 60’s and the Speedmaster Professional was the first watch that was on the moon; which was worn by Buzz Aldrin.

Omega has also been tied in with James Bond movies since the mid 90’s. Pierce Bronson was the first to wear the Omega Seamaster Quartz Professional in the film Goldeneye. The Seamaster 300M Chronometer is now the official James Bond watch.  The 40th anniversary of James Bond had a commemorative 007 edition of the watch.

Omega watches have been the official timekeeper for the Olympics, which began in the Summer Olympics of 1932.

Omega watches have been a huge part of peoples lives for several years and will be a part of future generations to come.
